Fire Chief

Head of the Billerica Fire Department. Until 1918 the department was run by an annually appointed Fire Engineer, whose members chose one of their number as chief engineer each year; those men are listed under Fire Engineer. Ernest N. Bartlett became chief in 1918, and when the town accepted Chapter 480 of the Acts of 1920 at the 1921 annual meeting, establishing the offices of chief and assistant chief, he became Billerica's first permanent fire chief. He served until he retired on November 15, 1945.
